Increasing the level of awareness of young people about the importance of active citizenship

Călin is a high school student in Sighișoara, involved, curious and eager to participate in all the activities proposed by us. Together with 39 other high school students from his city, Viscri and Mălâncrav, he had the opportunity, last autumn, to take part in an interesting project funded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He arrived at the meeting of the village council from Viscri, then went to the Brașov County Council, where he attended another meeting. The group of young people finally travelled to Bucharest, to the Parliament Palace, where they learned about the role of the Parliament and its chambers.

All these activities aimed to increase the level of awareness of young people about the importance of active citizenship, contributing to the education of a generation of young people involved and responsible for supporting democracy and defending fundamental values.

The project lasted 3 months and included, in addition to the visits already mentioned, civic education workshops, a sociological analysis on the subject of community involvement, which was debated by over 750 young people, but also the simulation of a public debate in Sighisoara entitled “What do young people want for the communities they belong to?” Then Călin and the other participants proposed to the representatives of the mayor’s office several measures, including the release of free subscriptions for public transport for students. A few months later, the students were happy to hear the news of the approval of the draft decision on granting this gratuity.
