Involving local comunities
Did you know that a secular tree oxygenates several generations in a row? The project we are talking about was developed by MET in an area of over 126,000 hectares, including 46 villages in 11 communes and the city of Sighișoara. MET has promoted and encouraged the protection and sustainable management of secular grasslands through the co-interest of local communities. On the occasion of the project over 30 pasture habitats with secular trees and over 70 secular trees that meet the conditions of “monuments of nature” were identified. Students from 17 schools participated in this project, they sent us almost 300 letters describing a large tree in their area. This is how the oak from Mercheașa was identified, which is now on the list of monuments of nature.
The project was carried out between April 2009 and November 2010, with support provided by the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism.
